How to Plan Music for a Multicultural Wedding in Vancouver
At a multicultural wedding, the music should reflect the couple and the people celebrating with them. We meet with every couple early in the planning process to learn what matters to them, then keep refining the music as the wedding gets closer.
1. Ask each family which songs and traditions matter most
Start by asking each family about the songs and traditions they hope to hear. Tell your DJ about meaningful favourites and any songs tied to a particular moment. Just as helpful: mention songs that carry difficult associations for your family so they can be left out.
2. Choose music for the ceremony, dinner and dancing separately
Think about the feeling you want at each part of the day. We help couples choose music and share our Spotify, Apple Music, and YouTube playlists as a starting point. You can use those suggestions, add your own discoveries, and keep building a list that feels like yours.
3. Plan how the DJ will move between genres
A plan gives your DJ direction, but the dance floor tells them what’s working. Our DJs watch who’s dancing and move between genres and languages to suit the room. Older family members may lead the dancing early on, with younger guests joining later, so the music can shift as the crowd does.
4. Decide how guest requests will work
Tell your DJ whether you want them to take requests. If you do, we consider each request in the context of the music already playing and the crowd on the floor. We’re also big proponents of a “do not play” list: our planning platform, Vibo, has a place to add songs you don’t want played.
5. Review the plan with your DJ before the wedding
Our planning process begins about 120 days before the wedding, with check-ins roughly every 30 days and a final check-in two weeks out. Couples can keep adding new finds and old favourites in Vibo throughout that time. Those conversations help us shape a playlist that’s specific to you and ready for the day.
